Diabetes Mellitus is a global health emergency that has reached alarming levels. Globally, about half billion people are living with diabetes mellitus.  As per International Diabetes Federation (IDF) 10th Atlas, about 537 million people have diabetes which will reach to 643 million by 2030 if preventive steps are not taken today. 

As per IDF 10th Atlas about 541 million people are having pre diabetes i.e., impaired glucose tolerance test. These pre diabetes people are in immediate need of lifestyle modification to prevent their progression towards frank diabetes requiring pharmacotherapy. 

India alone is home about 77 million diabetes patients. Half of these people are still unknown about their condition. Due to the genetic susceptibility of South-East Asian Population including Indian people are on the risk of having type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its complications at a decade earlier than their western counterparts. 

People with diabetes are at risk of having life threatening acute and chronic complications due to poor glycemic control. Diabetes must be taken seriously by all the stake holders like patient, family members, doctors, policy makers etc. 

There are many barriers to the effective treatment of diabetes mellitus namely lack of access to diabetes care, poor compliance, affordability, lack of awareness etc. One of the most important reasons is lack of awareness regarding disease process and poor support system to the patient.
